Beauty Briefs: The Lip Bar x Target Launch

Former Wall Street financial analyst Melissa Butler and her vibrant, vegan and cruelty free lipstick brand The Lip Bar are headed to a Target store near you!
The Black-owned beauty brand recently announced on its website that it would be launching in 44 Target stores across the country and available on Target.com on Sunday, February 18th. Lip Bar Babes also get a chance to check out two exclusive shades to Target: Unimpressed, a liquid matte lip color, and Baddie, a lip gloss.
The Lip Bar’s lipsticks, liquid lip color and glosses range from $10-$13 and are formulated with ingredients like: almond oil, shea butter, coconut oil, avocado oil and vitamin E to nourish lips and add a pop of color to your favorite makeup look.
The cocktail inspired concept for the lipsticks came to Butler while enjoying drinks with some friends at an afterwork happy hour in New York City.

Frustrated by the beauty industry, in particular the use of chemicals in product formulations and lack of color variety and representation for women of color, founder and CEO Melissa Butler began making lipsticks in her kitchen.

“I started making lipstick in my kitchen because I believed beauty shouldn’t compromise health and because I was determined to not change the way I looked to fit into some superficial or trendy beauty standard. F*** that. There is no standard.” Melissa Butler

In 2013, after raking in $107,000 in her first two years on the market Butler was able to quit her job and focus 100 percent on building the company.
Like many other “homemade” brands, the next step was to secure additional funding and in 2015 Butler and her business partner appeared on ABC’s hit business reality show, Shark Tank.

During their appearance, the duo was not only referred to as “colorful cockroaches” but subjected to additional not-so-nice commentary from one investor who stated, “I can see a massive market share in the clown market.” Yikes!
Now worth nearly half-a-million dollars, it seems like the only clowns are the sharks that passed up the opportunity to invest in The Lip Bar. Ha, I guess the joke’s on them!
